Simply put, sales velocity is the rate at which you are selling.

However, sales velocity isn’t sales history. Sales history is a measure of how your product has performed over its entire life on Amazon. Sales velocity measures your average daily sales over a short period of time.

As such, sales velocity is about what is happening now. It’s not a record of your entire sales past.

Why Is It So Important?

Current sales are valued more than past sales by the A9 algorithm. Why? Because sales velocity shows Amazon that today’s shoppers think your product is valuable.

Recent sales prove that your product fulfills a search query. If customers are buying your product, they found what they were looking for. As such, the A9 algorithm should continue to show your product for those queries to help customers find exactly what they are looking for.

How Can You Increase Sales Velocity?

Increasing sales velocity comes down to increasing sales and conversion rate, while maintaining those rates over time. Don’t expect to get a huge influx of sales for one day or one week and then rise to the top of Amazon’s rankings. You need to increase your sales velocity and sustain that increase in velocity to succeed.

In that regard, sales velocity works hand in hand with your sales history. To increase your sales velocity and build a strong sales history, you do have a couple of options:

  • Optimize your listings for better conversion. Evaluate your images, content, and keywords.
  • Run long-term promotions. Because sales history is still a factor in A9, you should focus on more long-term promotions that keep customers purchasing for weeks on end to build steady traffic and sales over time.
  • Create PPC campaigns. These campaigns can help you get to the top of an Amazon SERP to increase your sales until your rank begins to improve organically.
