Advanced Insights for Winning Amazon’s Featured Offer (Buy Box)

When several sellers offer the same product, Amazon features one offer on the product page with the Add to Cart and Buy Now buttons attached to it. Amazon now calls this the Featured Offer, though most sellers still know it as the Buy Box. Because most shoppers buy from the Featured Offer without comparing other sellers, winning the offer has a direct impact on sales.

Amazon does not publish a formula or weighting for how it chooses the Featured Offer. Older guides described point systems and fixed brackets for each metric, but those models are outdated and should not be used to make decisions. Below are some key factors Amazon says it evaluates, as of 2026, and how sellers can use that to improve their chances.

What Changed in 2026

In July 2026, Amazon began removing the separate performance eligibility step for the Featured Offer. Before this change, a seller had to pass a performance check before their offer could compete. Now Amazon considers every offer, and seller performance feeds directly into the selection alongside price and delivery.

For sellers, this cuts both ways. Offers that were previously excluded can now compete. At the same time, performance still counts, so a seller with weaker metrics will need a lower price or faster delivery to win against a seller with stronger metrics.

What Amazon Evaluates

According to Amazon's current guidance, the Featured Offer is selected based on criteria that matter most to customers:

  • Competitive price: The total price, including shipping, compared with other offers
  • Delivery speed and certainty: Fast, free shipping and a narrow, reliable delivery window
  • Availability: Only in stock offers can be featured
  • Customer experience: A consistent record of correct, on-time orders with few problems
Price

The landed price is the total the customer pays: the item price plus shipping in the US, and shipping plus VAT in the UK and Europe. Price is the one factor a seller can change directly and immediately, which makes it the fastest lever available.

Price alone is not enough. Amazon weighs price against delivery and performance. A seller with weaker performance than competing sellers will usually need a lower price to win the Featured Offer. A seller with stronger performance can often hold the Featured Offer at a higher price. This is the practical value of good performance: it protects margin.

Delivery Speed and Fulfillment Method

Amazon favors offers with fast, free shipping and delivery dates it can promise with confidence. A narrow delivery window, such as a single date, is stronger than a wide range.

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is one way to deliver quickly and reliably, but it is not required. Amazon states that fulfilling orders yourself can be just as effective at winning the Featured Offer as using Amazon’s fulfillment network. A seller fulfilling their own orders (FBM) can compete with FBA sellers if their price, delivery speed, and performance are competitive.

Choosing between FBA and FBM is a business decision. FBA fees, storage costs, and inventory limits can reduce margin if the method is not planned carefully. Before deciding, review who you are competing against. The “Other sellers on Amazon” panel on a product page shows each offer’s price, its delivery date, and whether it ships from Amazon or the seller. This helps you identify the delivery promise you need to match or beat on your own listings and on listings you plan to enter.

Inventory

Staying in stock keeps your offer in the running. An offer that is out of stock cannot be featured, and every stockout hands sales to a competing seller until you are back in stock.

Amazon does not publish how inventory history is weighed, but consistent availability supports the other factors Amazon does evaluate, including delivery speed and order experience. Practical steps include forecasting demand before promotions and peak seasons, monitoring FBA capacity limits, and keeping a backup fulfillment option ready for high-volume items.

Seller Performance Metrics

Amazon tracks seller performance in Account Health in Seller Central. These metrics affect both the Featured Offer and the overall health of the account. The targets below are Amazon’s published thresholds. Sellers competing for the Featured Offer on contested listings should aim to stay well inside them.

Customer Messages

Reply to buyer messages within 24 hours, including weekends and holidays. Amazon’s target is to answer more than 90% of messages within that time. Replies to follow-up messages from the customer count, too, so keep responding until the conversation is resolved.

Automated replies do not count as responses. For messages that do not need a reply, such as a buyer saying thank you, use the “No response needed” option in the message thread within 24 hours. This removes the message from your response-time metric.

Seller Feedback

Negative feedback counts toward Order Defect Rate, so managing it has a direct effect on performance. Amazon’s communication rules apply to every request, and breaking them can lead to account action.

  • Requesting feedback. Use the Request a Review button in Seller Central or send one neutral request per order. Requests cannot ask only for positive feedback and cannot offer anything in return.
  • Packaging inserts. Inserts cannot ask for positive feedback or reviews or steer unhappy customers away from leaving feedback.
  • Resolving negative feedback. Contact the buyer, resolve the problem with a refund or replacement where appropriate, and then politely ask whether they would consider removing the feedback. Never offer a refund, credit, or gift in exchange for removal.
  • Requesting removal from Amazon. Amazon will remove feedback that breaks its guidelines, such as feedback that is a product review, contains obscene language or personal information, or relates to an FBA delivery issue that Amazon is responsible for. Submit these through the feedback manager in Seller Central.

Where to Focus First

Start with the factor where you are furthest behind competing sellers. Price changes take effect right away. Delivery improvements, such as tighter shipping templates, a faster carrier, or a product transfer into FBA, take days to weeks. Performance metrics take the longest because they move with rolling windows.

A practical order for most sellers:

  1. Keep in-stock items in stock and fix any stockouts.
  2. Bring every Account Health metric inside Amazon’s targets.
  3. Improve the delivery promise on your highest-volume listings.
  4. Adjust price last, once the other factors are in place, so you are not giving up margin unnecessarily.

The Featured Offer is no longer gated by a separate eligibility check, but Amazon still chooses it based on price, delivery speed, availability, and seller performance. There is no published formula, so the most reliable approach is to stay competitive on all four metrics: price your total offer competitively, promise and hit fast delivery dates, stay in stock, and keep your Account Health metrics well within Amazon’s targets. Sellers who do this can win the Featured Offer more often, and at a better price.
